On Sunday morning we participated in a worldwide photography event organized by the New York Times called A Moment In Time. In a nutshell, people all around the world were asked to take a photo on Sunday, May 2, at 15:00 hours UTC. In Minneapolis, that was 10 AM. It was a beautiful (but windy) Sunday morning. With cameras in tow, John and I headed to the heart of our city — a place we love but dont often take the time to go “just for fun.” Having grown up on a farm in Iowa, it still takes my breath away to stand downtown and just look UP (even in Minneapolis). It’s probably a good thing we were there on a Sunday morning, otherwise I probably would’ve been bumping into people as I walked with my neck cranked upwards, camera attached to my eye socket. (No, I have never been to New York City…) Anyway, I knew 10 AM had hit when I heard the sound of church bells bouncing between the tall buildings. Here’s the photo I took and will be submitted to the NY Times project. :

We both were snapping away for awhile after the 10 AM ‘moment’ and caught some other great shots downtown that I will post on my facebook page later this week.
As I was editing this photo, it reminded me of a favorite I took in Venice, Italy in 2007 — also looking up.

Which reminds me….
This weekend we also worked hard to get an Etsy page up and running. There you can purchase Sara Jayne Photo Art prints (like the Venice photo above) and many more taken throughout my various travels over the years. New art prints will be added periodically so please check back often! To access our Etsy store please visit sarajaynephoto.etsy.com
There are some colorful changes happening over on my portfolio site as I prepare for a big update of the images in all the galleries. (coming soon! I am so excited to finally breathe some life back into this blog! Since the last post, I have switched over to WordPress as a host so I could share bigger photos – be sure to update your bookmarks.
What do you think of the new, brighter ‘look’ for Sara Jayne Photography? Is it looking “up” too?

I glanced at my calendar today only to realize my brother & sister-in-law’s 1st wedding anniversary is coming up on April 25. (Happy Anniversary to them, by the way!!) Then, my thoughts immediately went to this sorely neglected blog site and I remembered my last post of photos was from my brother’s wedding A YEAR AGO. Talk about a major blog FAIL!
Once ‘busy season’ hit last year, I got caught up in the excitement and ease of sharing my work on a Facebook fan page and left this blog in the dust. What can I say, I’m a sucker for all those comments and “likes” that you all leave

Its fun to see which photos catch one person’s eye over another and admittedly…I like spending my time editing
images to share with you rather than a long drawn out explanation of what you can clearly
see was a fun or interesting photo shoot! After all, a picture
is worth a thousand words (and sometimes more)!
So as I prepare to make some long overdue changes and updates to my portfolio site and this blog, I vow to blog more often than a year at a time–even if they are short on words and long on images. I have so many exciting adventures in store for this summer!
To bring you up to speed for the sake of future blog posts, I would like to mention a couple exciting personal things that happened this past year!
My niece Greta was born in August and to say the least — I can’t get enough of her!
Here is a photo I took on Monday. Those big blue eyes just melt my heart!! Dont be surprised if more photos of her pop up on the blog from time to time.
And last but not least, this blog update wouldn’t be complete without mentioning two little words: wedding planning! Many of you who I’ve worked with have met my fiancé John, as he assists with photo shoots and weddings whenever possible. We’ve formed quite a team, and words can’t express how grateful I am to have him in my life. We can’t wait for our June 25, 2011 garden wedding in Iowa — and no, we are NOT photographing our own wedding.
We just got back from shooting an amazing destination wedding in Negril, Jamaica, so I will leave you today with a teaser. (See what I mean about those thousand words!)

It’s not every weekend I get to be IN a wedding, let alone play the role of Maid of Honor AND photographer, but this particular weekend I was. My brother, Ryan and his beautiful wife Angela tied the knot on April 25th! It was so much fun!!

Seems like just yesterday I was relatively new to the world of portrait photography (behind the camera, anyway) and Kelli was one of the first high school seniors I photographed. Now she’s getting married, and I feel old!
Josh and Kelli are planning a late August wedding, but decided to have a spring engagement shoot. It was a cold and rainy day, so most of the shoot was done in the barn at my favorite place,
Prairie Pedlar. Luckily towards the end of the shoot, the rain started clearing up so we were able to go outside. What can I say, the umbrella makes a great prop!! {s.j}

We had a beautiful spring drive down to Davenport, Iowa recently to witness my college friend Erin’s ‘tying of the knot’ with her adorable guy, Andy. Though I was able to kick back and enjoy their wedding as a ‘guest’ rather than ‘the photographer’, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that my camera was in tow anyway. Below are a few of my favorite photos of their awesome day.

This little guy kept bending down like the photographers to get
a photo of the first dance.
TOO CUTE!
Father – Daughter dance
Congratulations Erin & Andy… its about time you two lovebirds made it official
We had a blast at your wedding — come visit us soon here in Minneapolis!

I just love Spring in the Midwest! As soon as the snow melts, everyone starts coming out of hibernation from the long cold winter. The trails are filled with runners and dog walkers. The green grass starts to peep through and trees start to bud. To me, its just a cluster of happiness everywhere I turn. As I mentioned in my last blog posting – with Spring comes the busy ‘Wedding Season’ and outdoor portrait sessions, my favorite. I added a fab new fixed 50mm lens to my gear bag, and couldn’t wait to try it out. Here are a few sessions I did entirely with the new lens — can’t wait to use it at the next wedding! Special thanks to Tess, Jess, and Alyssa for being my guinea pigs!!
All of these shots were taken within short walking distance from my place — the grass hasn’t quite poked through the brush yet, so they look a little fall-like. I just love the lens flare this lens makes — check out that angelic glow in the last photo!
Stay tuned for more fab shots with the new lens!!

Spring is in the air and I couldn’t be more excited!! Not only does that mean its the start of ‘Wedding Season’, but I can finally go outside for photo sessions and not have to wear 10 layers of clothing – Hooray! It may be jumping the gun a bit, but my patio is already filled with budding containers of flowers because I just couldn’t wait any longer…Happy Spring, everyone!!! {s.j}
